Employment:
Americans wishing to work in Malaysia must have an employment pass. An employer will apply on behalf of the potential employee to the Immigration Department for permission to employ an expatriate.
Once permission is granted, the employer will inform the employee of the Department's approval. Only then can the person move to Malaysia to have his/her passport endorsed with an employment pass.
The right to work in Malaysia is limited to a particular job with a particular employer. It is not a general right to work. Usually, employment passes are limited to several years duration. At the conclustion of the term, or if the job has been terminated beforehand, the employee must leave the country.
The spouse/ partner of an employee and his/her dependents enjoy the same rights as the employee holding the employment pass and they may come and go from Malaysia during the term of employment.
